AIR MONITORING & CLEARANCE

Independent Monitoring. Documented Project Conditions.

TESTS Environmental provides project air monitoring, PCM analysis and clearance support for asbestos-related work and other authorized environmental projects throughout California and Nevada.

We help clients document airborne-fiber conditions, evaluate completed work under the applicable protocol and maintain clear project records from mobilization through closeout.

PROJECT SERVICES

Air Monitoring and Clearance Support Matched to the Scope

Requirements vary by material, activity, jurisdiction, specification and analytical method. Services are defined for each assignment before work begins.

01

Asbestos Project Air Monitoring

Collection of area air samples during asbestos-related activities to document airborne-fiber conditions under the agreed monitoring plan.

02

PCM Air-Sample Analysis

Phase contrast microscopy analysis using applicable NIOSH 7400 counting rules, with results reported as fibers per cubic centimeter.

03

Final Visual Observation

Independent observation of accessible work areas after cleaning and before clearance sampling, when included in the project scope.

04

Clearance Air Sampling

Collection and evaluation of clearance samples using the analytical method and acceptance criteria specified for the project.

05

On-Site PCM Support

Field-based PCM analysis may be available for selected projects when planned in advance and appropriate to the required method.

06

TEM Laboratory Coordination

Coordination with qualified third-party laboratories when transmission electron microscopy is specified or otherwise required.

07

Lead Air Monitoring

Personal or area lead air sampling may be provided when expressly included in the project scope and paired with the appropriate laboratory method.

08

Closeout Documentation

Organized field records, sample information, analytical results and project-specific clearance documentation.

UNDERSTANDING THE METHOD

PCM and TEM Do Not Answer the Same Question

Choosing the analytical method matters. Project requirements, building type, specification and regulatory framework determine the appropriate approach.

  • PCM counts qualifying fibers by optical microscopy
  • PCM does not identify fibers as asbestos or non-asbestos
  • TEM can identify asbestos structures at greater resolution
  • Clearance criteria must be tied to the specified method
  • Results should be interpreted within the actual project scope

TESTS confirms the required method and acceptance criteria during scope development. TEM analysis is coordinated through qualified third-party laboratories.

OUR PROCESS

Consistent From Setup Through Closeout

1

Confirm Requirements

We review the project, work areas, schedule, specifications, sampling plan and clearance method.

2

Monitor Conditions

Samples and field observations are documented during the authorized project activities.

3

Evaluate Results

Analytical data are reviewed against the applicable project method and stated criteria.

4

Document Completion

Project records and clearance information are organized and communicated to the client.

INDEPENDENT CONSULTING

Clear Separation Between Oversight and Abatement

TESTS Environmental provides independent consulting, monitoring and clearance support and does not perform asbestos abatement. This separation keeps observations and project documentation focused on the applicable scope, analytical information and observed conditions.

Projects We Support

  • Commercial and industrial properties
  • Healthcare and institutional facilities
  • Schools and educational buildings
  • Multifamily and residential projects
  • Renovation and demolition work
  • Property-management portfolios

METHOD-SPECIFIC RESULTS

Clearance Is Not a Universal Number

Acceptance criteria and analytical methods vary by project. A PCM result expressed in fibers per cubic centimeter should not be represented as asbestos-specific identification, and an AHERA-related framework should not be confused with the NIOSH 7400 fiber-counting method itself.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Air Monitoring & Clearance FAQs

Tell us the project type, location and governing documents. We will help identify an appropriate monitoring and clearance scope.

What does PCM air sampling measure?

PCM analysis counts fibers meeting specified dimensional and optical criteria and reports a fiber concentration. It does not distinguish asbestos fibers from other fibers.

When is TEM clearance appropriate?

TEM may be specified by the project, required under an applicable framework or selected when asbestos-specific identification is needed. The required method should be confirmed before sampling.

Does every project use the same clearance criterion?

No. The method and acceptance criteria depend on the project documents, regulatory framework, building type and scope. These requirements should be defined before work begins.

Can TESTS provide same-day PCM results?

Same-day or on-site PCM support may be available for selected projects when arranged in advance. Availability depends on scope, schedule, staffing and sample volume.

What information is needed for a proposal?

Provide the project address, work description, identified materials, anticipated schedule and shifts, containment count, applicable specification, required analytical method and expected clearance criteria.
